Motivation Models: Carrot or Stick?

Keeping employees motivated and challenged can be a complex task. Over the years, many leaders have relied on the carrot and stick motivation model (i.e. carrot is a reward for good behavior and stick is a consequence for poor behavior.) However, when your goal as a leader becomes compliance, chances are the leader will be the only one motivated in the team. This makes it critical for leaders to understand the needs of their employees and find other methods to motivate them.

This course will teach participants how to tailor their leadership and communication styles to suit the needs of the team. This will create a shared vision for the organization, build group identity, create a culture of ownership, and establish a more collaborative, inspiring work environment.

Motivation Models

Leaders should consider doing certain motivation models together that will enhance employee motivation. In this session, participants will explore the intrinsic and extrinsic models as well as identify the four stages of motivation, including clarity, desire, ability, and reinforcement.

Extrinsic Motivation Model

This session will examine how the social structure and environment around us affect motivation. Participants will also explore the four P’s of the extrinsic motivation model and explore how to set goals and a reward system using the Losada principle.

Intrinsic Motivation Model

This session will establish the basis for intrinsic motivation factors such as vision, mission, goals, and roles. Participants will explore how these factors align with personal values, and will examine what builds internal motivation in their teams.
