A leader with good political skills manages to gain more personal power and can handle stress and job demands better, therefore having a greater impact on organizational goals. This course focuses on building a strong understanding of organizational politics, addressing challenges, and discovering ways to ethically approach workplace politics.
This course is ideal for leaders at all levels or anyone who desires to have a better understanding of the strategies needed to successfully navigate organizational politics and overcome challenging situations within the workplace.

In this session, a broad overview of organizational politics and the benefits and challenges associated with it will be discussed. We will also identify the four metaphors of organizational politics identified by Michael Jarrett, which includes Weeds, Rocks, High Ground, and Woods. Participants will examine the Weeds domain and learn strategies to deal with this domain in greater detail.

Rocks can often symbolize a stabilizing foundation. The same can be said of the Rock domain in organizational politics. In this session, we will explore how the Rock domain can keep an organization steady in times of crisis. We will also learn about the individual interactions and the formal sources of authority as they relate to the Rock domain.

In this session, we will define the High Ground domain which combines formal authority with organizational systems. Participants will examine how using structures of control systems, incentives, and sanctions can keep the organization in compliance, yet also lead to the company becoming overly bureaucratic while preventing innovation.

In this session, we will explore the Woods domain and discover how it can provide cover and safety for people in your organization while also being a bewildering place where good ideas and necessary changes can get lost.
