We’ve got people who do just what they have to do, bare minimum: “I’m going to do what I have to do to make sure that I don’t get canned”, right? That’s our red line – I’m going to do exactly what it is that I have to do, nothing more. And then we’ve got those people who are kicking butt: they are above and beyond, “you just tell me what you need boss, we’ll get it done, we’re going to get knocked out. I’m in it to win it, let’s go, let’s do this thing”, right
IAnd then we’ve got this big space in between my red line and my blue line, and that space is discretionary effort. That is, are people trying harder than they have to, and that’s where we meet optimal results. It’s somewhere between, “I’m doing the bare minimum to make sure I don’t get canned”, and “I’m going so far above and beyond that they’re going to make me CEO of this place next week.
